At this point I could care less. Blow this shiz up. Let the NHLPA decertify or whatever.
Get some replacement players, start a new league, and offer the current NHL'ers a job at 1/2 there pay.
And finally, kidnap Crosby and send him to the Soviet Union to play with Ovo |

Simmonds had 16 goals in 09-10, double of that would be 32 not 28.
Not a big deal, but when you use stats to drive your poorly organized points across, at least get them right. |

I totally agree that shorter contracts leads to more rapid increases in salary (which is good for the players). The exception would be players whose quality of play decreases, but that normally happens to older players who have a hard time getting long term contracts anyways. |

Woah, woah, woah... "CONTINUED" to be a star goalie? Rick Dipietro? When was he ever a star goalie? |

Rick Dipietro
In 2006 the NY Islanders signed DiPietro to a 15-year, $67.5 million ($4.5 per). Had he stayed healthy and continued to be a star goalie think of the money he could have gotten in 2011 had it been a five year deal? of course it worked out for Dipietro...financially...because of all his injuries he was over-payed...but that is the only way a star player with a contract over five years actually DOES get more money than he would have if he had only signed a five year deal.

Why would you pour your heart into a blog, only to completely kill your argument at the end by citing Rick DiPietro? |

Ek - you should spend less time pretending to be chatting with NHL players all day and spend more time thinking about calibrating optimism meter.
Unless of course your plan is to keep it looking slightly optimistic in perpetuity until a few months or years down the road when there really IS a deal made, then you think it will make you look informed... - Senators2112

It isn't just about guys who already have 5 or more year contacts who would be hurt buy a 5 year limit. If there is a limit like that the thinking would be 5 year deals are for the stars, the top 5-10%. Then the 4 year deals would be the guys who are in the next 20-25%. The guys who are fringe 2nd mostly 3rd line guys would get 3 year deals and the lower 3rd line guys and 4th liners who just get the 1 maybe two year deals and would have to like year to year. With a 5 year limit you wouldn't see guys like Jason Chimera would not get 4 year deals like he did with the Jackets. You think with a 5 year limit on deals Jay Beagle gets a three year deal from the Caps or Justin Abdelkader gets a 4 year deal with the Wings? Heck no! The limt won't just hurt the top guys it will give owners a benchmark for what the stars get so the lower guys can't get that and will reduce the years of all contacts being signed. |

I think the players are a bit brainwashed. I saw JVR posting on his twitter account saying they have complete faith in Fehr and to look at how great he did for the MLBPA, how strong baseball is.
It took a Steroid induced HR race b/t McGuire and Sosa to get the fans back into baseball. What does JVR and the rest of the PA have up their sleeve to win back an apathetic fan base if this season gets axed???
News flash, the NHL may never be as strong in the States as the MLB was at its lowest point. |

Let's put this in perspective...
-In Canada, "the average Joe's" annual salary is ~$45K, while the average NHL player's annual player salary is $2.4M
- The average NHL pay cheque every two weeks is ~$92K, more than double the "the average Joe's" ANNUAL salary.
- Based on a $45K salary, it would take "the average Joe" 53.3 YEARS to make $2.4M. Pretty much their entire work life/career, and that's on the high side.
It blows my mind with how out of touch the NHLPA is. They have ZERO idea how good they have it. I hope league takes these spoiled brats to the cleaners!
